I found a bird with color bands. These birds are being studied by U.S and Canadian ornithologists due to the declining population. People mark these birds with color coded bands so that the combination of them will identify the individuals and enable us to see how they move around. See the picture.
The left leg has a light gray above and yellow below. The right leg has a black or dark gray flag above and a orange and a yellow bands below. I will contact the research coodinator and see if they know this one is at Bolivar Flats.

Hello! Thanks for the sighting!

This is a bird we banded last summer as a chick at a wetland we call
Prairie Chicken in southern Saskatchewan (nest CO-06-33; bands 47365).
It was seen at Bolivar Flats in the fall and again in the spring - we
are not sure if it wintered there. Hopefully it will show up on the
breeding grounds this summer!

Thanks again,

Cheri

John Whittle forwarded this info from the bander Cheri Gratto-Trevor:
John- Oh, you are good! - it is one of the very few (so far) where we reversed our usual pattern of black flag upper left and metal upper right, because she already had a single metal upper left. This is an adult female banded at nest SC-04-09, Lake Diefenbaker, Saskatchewan, this year. The nest was depredated about 14 June, and she didn't renest. She is actually a chick of ours from Big Quill Lake, SK, born in 2003 at nest QW-03-13.

I took this photo and reported it to North American Piping Plover Colorband Database cordinator (Rosemary) at piping.plover@nwo02.usace.army.mil . She found the bander and here is the reply I received:
--------
Hello! Rosemary sent me your sighting as it is one of my Piping Plovers banded in Saskatchewan, Canada. Great picture of the bands: it clearly shows the single light green lower left (as opposed to a dark green band), white flag upper right (the band with the 'tab' on it), and red over dark blue lower right. [This is the only bird we have with the metal above the flag on upper right].
I first caught this female (bands 02241) in 2002 at Chaplin Lake, in southern Saskatchewan (nest CH-02-12 female). Chaplin Lake is a large alkaline wetland about 80 km east of Moose Jaw, SK. This year we found her at Lake Diefenbaker (about 70 km north of her previous nest), on nest with a new mate (nest DN-03-07). Lake Diefenbaker is a very large sandy created wetland (created for power production and recreation). The nest hatched 24 June (they had a protective exclosure on it). I'm not sure if any chicks fledged.
This is part of a 5 year study on survival and movements (within and between seasons) of Saskatchewan Piping Plovers. This is the second year - we've marked about 400 adults and another 150 chicks so far with unique combinations (all with 5 bands - a white flag (the tabbed band), a metal, and three colour bands on the lower legs in total. Some chicks have just a metal upper right, and many others have a metal and a white flag on the upper legs only.
Your sighting is much appreciated! See more!

Here is the info on the first (#269) bird from Dr. Cheri Gratto-Trevor, Research Scientist at Canadian Wildlife Service <Cheri.Gratto-Trevor@EC.GC.CA>:
"this is SC-02-12 male - banded as an adult on nest at Lake Diefenbaker, SK in 2002, then seen in 2003 and 2004 at
Reflex Lake, Alberta, and 2005 at Freshwater Lake, Alberta. He's been seen several times at Bolivar Flats in previous years - nice to know that he's back!!!!!"

I heard from Daniel H. Catlin
of Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University <dcatlin@vt.edu>:
"That is definitely one of my birds. Very cool, nice picture. That bird was banded as an adult this year on the tenth of June on a sandbar on the Missouri River at Yankton South Dakota. This bird was last seen on the breeding site on the fourth of July, after having fledged all four chicks!
