Laughing Gull
(Thanks to Texbirders for ID)

Location: George Bush Park, Katy, Texas

Date: 18/AUG/07

Notes:
Today I found this gull sitting on an island by the largest pond in the George Bush Park. It is directly east of Barker Cypress Road near the Westheimer Pkwy intersection. If you want to see it use the parking lot past the pond on Barker Cypress. I first spotted it at 10:30 am and then it was sitting at the same location at 2:00 pm. I think it is injured because it never moved until I left at  4:00pm.

This gull is not very large. I could only compared it to a Greater Yellowlegs walked by. The gull is not much larger than the Yellowlegs.  See the bottom picture.

The only gulls I have seen in Katy is Ring-billed. I am not sure if I should see the white spots on Juv. Ringbilled Gull. I am not sure about the leg color either.

Do you have any ideas on ID?

I also took pictures of Willet that Drew spotted. He said it has been reported by others before. The shots were severely over-exposed so I darkened it. Oh well.

Western Kingbird

Location: Katy, Texas

Date: 07/JUL/07

Notes:
This year we had rain almost everyday in June and the first week of July.  Two nests of Western Kingbird in my subdivision failed. The only fledglings I have seen this season are these guys. It is difficult to photograph them because they hide very well.
Judged by the tail length, it will be a few more days before they can fly like adults.

English: Clapper Rail

Japanese: onikuina

Latin: Rallus longirostris

Date: 20/MAY/2007

Location: Port Bolivar, Texas

Note: I found a Clapper Rail with 3 chicks at a pond on Frenchtown Road. They were really cautious at the beggining, but after waiting for 30 min. or so they decided I have turned into a rock or something. :-)
First one chick came out of reed, then the mom and two other chicks followed her. This one chick can walk fast so it was right behind the mom. The chick even followed her into a pond and then realized it was way too deep and turned around.
