There was a Black-chinned Hummingbird wintered in my yard.  I had a chance to observe a young male  bird slowly turn into an adult plumage.

Notes:
1st Picture
(Date: 14/DEC/2003): This is a sub-adult male just started to show his gorget.  Relatively wide and long wings suggest Black-chinned.
Notice the tail feathers extend slightly beyond the wing tip.

2nd Picture (Date: 21/FEB/2004): The same bird showing more gorget development during its 1st winter.

3rd Picture (Date: 11/MAR/2004): It lost some white feathers on the face and show dark ones underneath.  It is molting the back and side feathers as well.  Also,

4th Picture (DAte: 18/MAR/2004): It lost more white feathers and the face is mostly dark. Compared to the 1st picture, the tail feathers are much longer and its tip extends way beyond the wing tip.  The back has much more green than it had in December.
