English: Neotropic Cormorant

Latin: Phalacrocorax brasilianus

Notes: TOP: Chick with mouth open.

MID: Two chicks with a juvenile bird. A juvenile Neotropic Cormorant has a shorter tail than adult, lacks white V around gape, and therefore, I thought it was a Double-crested Cormorant. The following points help identification.

1. Neotropic has a pointed < shape skin at the gape and Double-crested has more rounded shape.

2. Double-crested has more yellow in the bill and the lore.

3. Double-crested has lighter colored neck and breast than this bird.

Note: It was hot and this bird kept the bill open and moved throat rapidly to cool off. I think they do it by moving the tongue.
